Oxalic acid is used as a gangue depressant during the flotation of ores containing oxidic minerals. Some of the processes were it is used are:
- Flotation of niobium – used as a silica, dolomite depressant and pH regulator
- During niobium/zirconium separation from bulk concentrate as a zirconium depressant.
- As a gangue depressant in the flotation of some rare earth oxides eg monazite
- Oxalic acid can also be used to pre-treat chalcopyrite coated with limonite. The limonite coat renders the chalcopyrite not amenable to flotation and is cleaned up by oxalic acid before washing and then flotation.
