Ferrous sulphate is used for detoxification of cyanide complexes in gold plant tailings before being channeled to the slimes dam.
It removes residual cyanide in the tailings aqueous solution by rendering it an immobile precipitate through the following reactions:
Fe2+ + 6CN- → Fe(CN)64-,
2Fe2+ + Fe(CN)64- → Fe2IIFeII(CN)6↓
The insoluble white ferrous ferrocyanide product rapidly absorbs oxygen from the air and turns deep blue, with the formation of ferric ferrocyanide
3Fe2IIFeII(CN)6 + O2+ 4H+→ Fe2III [FeII(CN)6 ]3 ↓ +2Fe2+ + 2H2O
Recommended Method of Application
Ferrous sulphate crystals are dissolved in cold water. The solution at a known concentration is kept in a container from where it is dosed at a rate that just detoxifies the residual cyanide. The optimal conditions for the detoxification reaction include a pH of between 5.5 and 6.5 as well as a Fe: CN ratio of 1:2.
