Litharge, PbO is formed from the oxidation of galena PbS.
It is a yellow fine powder with +99.8% PbO. Such purity is need in view of the major application of litharge which is for the quantitative determination of precious metals in an ore.
Process employed in determination of quantities of precious metals in ores is referred to as Cupellation.
This is a refining process in metallurgy were samples of ores or alloyed metals are exposed to high temperatures in controlled conditions to separate the noble metal from the unwanted. Precious metals do not readily oxidize, unlike base metals, so on exposure to high temperatures in aerated environments, other metals form a slag leaving them separated. This laboratory process is also referred to as fire assaying.
