D2EHPA is used in the extraction of uranium salts from solutions containing sulphates, perchlorates or chlorides. This process is called the ‘Dapex procedure’.
This is an organo-phosphorous compound with the formula (C8H17O)2PO2H which is a diester of phosphoric acid and 2-ethyl exanol. It is used in the solvent extraction of uranium and rare earth metals.
Kerosene is used as a solvent in the process. A complex is formed between conjugate base of D2EHPA and uranyl ions. The uranium is then stripped from the DEHPA-Kerosene solution using HCl, HF or carbonate solution.
